The University of Sydney wins men’s and women’s titles at the FISU Oceania 3×3 Continental Qualifying Tournament

The University of Sydney has secured a historic double victory at the FISU Oceania 3×3 Continental Qualifying Tournament, claiming both the men’s and women’s championships in a highly competitive event hosted by the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The victories ensure that both University of Sydney teams will represent FISU Oceania at the FISU 3×3 University World Cup, which will be held in Macau, China, in October 2025.

The FISU 3×3 University World Cup is one of the premier events on the international university sport calendar, bringing together the world’s top university basketball teams. Unlike traditional national team competitions, participating teams represent their universities on the global stage.

To qualify for the FISU 3×3 University World Cup, teams must first win their national university championship before progressing to and winning their respective continental qualifying tournament.

Following their success at the Oceania Qualifying Tournament, the University of Sydney men’s and women’s teams have now secured their place among the world’s leading university 3×3 basketball programs.

Strong competition at the Oceania QT event

The FISU Oceania 3×3 Continental Qualifying Tournament was organised at short notice following the late announcement of Macau as the host city for the 2025 University World Cup.

Despite the condensed preparation period, teams from Australia and New Zealand gathered at the University of the Sunshine Coast to compete for the region’s coveted World Cup qualification spots.

A total of five men’s teams and three women’s teams took to the court, delivering an exciting display of skill, athleticism and determination throughout the tournament.

Competition was fierce from the opening game, with every team battling for the opportunity to represent Oceania at the international level. Players showcased the fast-paced, high-energy style that has made 3×3 basketball one of the fastest-growing formats of the sport worldwide.

After a series of closely contested matches, the University of Sydney emerged as the standout institution, winning both divisions and completing a remarkable tournament sweep.

Looking ahead to Macau

With the Oceania titles secured, attention now turns to the FISU 3×3 University World Cup in Macau, where the University of Sydney men’s and women’s teams will compete against leading university teams from across the globe.

The success of the QT event highlights the strength of university 3×3 basketball in Oceania and positions the University of Sydney as a leading force in international 3×3 competition.
