Leading sustainable change in university sport across the Oceania region
In 2022, the FISU Oceania Executive Committee made a significant commitment by becoming a signatory to the United Nations Sport for Climate Action. Joining major global sport organisations was a bold step for our small, volunteer‑led federation — but we knew we had a responsibility to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future for sport in Oceania.
As a not‑for‑profit continental federation without major event‑hosting responsibilities, we initially questioned what meaningful climate action could look like for us. Our operations require air travel across a vast region, and we do not have the resources to run large‑scale sustainability campaigns. Still, we were determined to act.
In 2024, after extensive research and planning, we launched “Our Green Path”, a long‑term sustainability strategy outlining the actions we will take to reduce our carbon footprint and strengthen climate‑conscious practices across our network as we move toward 2030.
What We’ve Achieved So Far
✈️ Reduced Travel Emissions
We have reduced our travel requirements while maintaining strong connections with our members across the region.
🌊 Investment in Blue Carbon Projects
For every flight taken, we dedicate $25 AUD to blue carbon initiatives delivered within the Pacific — supporting ecosystems that naturally absorb and store carbon.
♻️ Sustainable Merchandise and Procurement
We have significantly reduced promotional merchandise orders. When items are required, we choose recycled, environmentally conscious products and prioritise local supply chains wherever possible.
📣 Online Sustainability Campaigns
We deliver digital campaigns to raise awareness and educate our community about sustainability and climate action in sport.
🤝 Membership in Sports Environment Alliance
Joining the Sports Environment Alliance helps us continue learning, growing, and collaborating with others committed to climate action in sport.
🌐 Collaboration with Global Sustainable Sports
We are working with Global Sustainable Sports to explore sustainability programs that can be implemented within Oceania communities.
🎓 University Partnerships
We are scoping partnerships with local universities to support research in sport and climate action, strengthening evidence‑based approaches across the region.
Our Ongoing Commitment
We recognise that we still have a long journey ahead. Some areas of our action plan are yet to be fully developed, but our commitment remains firm: we will continue working to reduce our carbon footprint, strengthen sustainable practices, and meet our long‑term climate targets.
