University sport is a global movement which enables tertiary students from across the world, the opportunity to participant in sport and pursue their sporting pathways.
For student-athletes who are striving to achieve their sporting goals, university sport events offer an opportunity to compete both nationally and internationally.
In the Oceania region, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji hold structured university championships and university games (events) enabling more than 15,000 students an opportunity to represent their university in their chosen sport. Across these three countries alone, more than 40 sports are offered throughout these competitions.
At the continental level, Europe, Africa, Asia and the America’s also host their own continental university games events. These Games attract thousands of university students and allow
Worldwide, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) not only present the World University Games in Summer and Winter formats (on the odd year) but they also offer numerous World University Championships in the even year. In 2026, there will be 22 World University Championships held showcasing more than 30 sports.
Many student-athletes that compete in these events go on to represent their country in their chosen sport and these events are a launchpad for many in their relevant sporting career.
University Sport is big business with a global reach and involves more than just student-athletes. It can also provide opportunities for coaches, administrators, team managers and other support personnel. It also employs thousands of people across university campuses and in organising committees of university events.
Investing in university sport, whether at the local level or internationally, can bring significant benefits to organisations and companies, especially when continental or international university sport events unite different cultures and communities.
