May was 3×3 month for many of our National University Sport Federations. Competitions and trials have been held in New Zealand and Papua New Guinea to select their teams to attend the FISU Oceania 3×3 Qualifying Tournament. University teams also continue to excel in local community competitions.
University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand
New Zealand held their 3×3 National Tertiary Championship event with competition hotly contested. The standard of competition is high. Teams that qualified for the FISU Oceania 3×3 Qualifying Tournament include Lincoln University and Auckland University of Technology in the women’s competition and University of Canterbury and Victoria University Wellington in the men’s competition.
Papua New Guinea
University of Papua New Guinea held trials to select their 3×3 team to attend the FISU Oceania qualifying tournament. Trials were held across two weeks to select a men’s and women’s squad for the event. The squads will continue to train and final team players will be confirmed in June.
“Attending the FISU Oceania 3×3 qualifying tournament is a wonderful opportunity for our university students” says Mr Cornelius Papau from PNG Sports Foundation. “The final teams that will attend will represent their university with immense pride and it will inspire others to participate in future sporting opportunities”, concludes Mr Papau.
New Caledonia
Students at The University of New Caledonia were busy during May. University teams competed in campus competitions as well as community competitions in the sprots of 3×3, volleyball, teqball and futsal. In addition to competing, students have the opportunity to learn about new sports such as sport climbing, badminton, handball and self defence.
UniSport Australia
Over 290 students from 25 Australian universities competed in the UniSport Nationals Swimming at the swim meet from 12-14 May in Sydney. 43 records were broken as The University of Queensland were awarded women’s champions and Bond University awarded men’s champions.
