Throughout 2023, Oceania will be featuring university clubs from around our region. All clubs are active on their university campuses and in their community. All provide opportunities for their members and unite students during their time at university.
Club of the week for 5 June is the Auckland University Table Tennis club
At the start of the year, the President of the Auckland University Table Tennis club had plan – to bring more people to the club and provide social sport opportunities with some competitions thrown in.
“As a club, we were struggling to get students interested to come and play table tennis, but after some careful planning and lots of hard work we now have an active club with our club numbers consistently growing”, says President Mr Thomas Mak. “The students really enjoy attending our social table tennis sessions and many have made new friends”, says Mr Mak.
Not only does the club hold regular social Sunday sessions for people to come and try their hand at the sport, but the club has also started to host tournaments for those looking for a bit of competition.
“We joined forces with the Auckland University Chinese Student Society to put on a Easter Tournament for table tennis on campus”, says Mr Mak. “The event was such a success that we plan on making it annual”, concluded Mr Mak.
The club is a great example of perseverance and positivity with a mission to make their club inclusive and accessible for all students on campus.
