Is your university campus a healthy campus? This question can be proposed to all university campuses across the Pacific regardless of their ranking or size. A healthy campus is one that embraces all aspects of life on campus for its students and communities.
Fortunately there is a global program that focuses on this very topic.
The Healthy Campus Program is a global program led by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). It brings together seven domains that focus on:
- Physical education and sport
- Nutrition
- Disease prevention
- Mental and social health
- Risk behaviour
- Environment, sustainability and social responsibility
- Healthy Campus Management
As universities and tertiary institutions continue to expand, it is important that the health of their communities also thrive. The FISU Healthy Campus Program supports tertiary institutions to monitor the health and wellbeing of their campus students and communities by providing an extensive checklist and allocates a Healthy Campus Label depending upon the number of criteria that is met.
Each tertiary institution is operationally different, but all institutions can become a healthy campus. The Healthy Campus Program unites all departments for a collaborative approach using the seven domains to focus on attaining the highest level possible.
At the end of 2025, more than 200 universities and tertiary institutions had become signatories to the Healthy Campus Program. This also creates a global network for collaboration, information sharing and research.
Focusing on providing a Healthy Campus can not only provide a better campus environment, but it can also lead to a greater investment in student wellbeing and result in higher graduate outcomes for students.
