Throughout 2023, Oceania will be featuring university clubs from around our region. All clubs are active on their university campuses and in their community. All provide opportunities for their members and unite students during their time at university.
Club of the week for 1 May is the Griffith University PNG Student Association.
The Griffith University PNG Student Association are a club that celebrates the unique cultures of Papua New Guinea and encourages a sense of community and belonging among their members.
Their activities focus on social events, career focused development and cultural celebrations.
The club also participates in the annual Pasifika Varsity Games. The Games are held in Brisbane every April where two sports are contested between Pasifika clubs from universities located in South East Queensland.
In 2023, volleyball and touch football are the sports on offer and whilst the club had mixed results on the field of play, all students agreed that participating in the Games was an opportunity to connect with other students from various Pasifika cultures.
President McKenna Sam is studying a Bachelor of Business majoring in Economics. As President of the club, Mr Sam believes in the power of sport. “Competing as a club in the Games is a terrific way to bring our club members together”, says Mr Sam. “Not only does it foster friendships, but it also allows us to connect with new students from other universities who have the same cultural heritage as us”.
