Throughout 2023, Oceania will be featuring university clubs from around our region. All clubs are active on their university campuses and in their community. All provide opportunities for their members and unite students during their time at university.
Club of the week for 8 May is the Fiji National University’s Natabua Rugby Club
When you think of the leading nations in the world for the sport of Rugby, Fiji is right at the top of the list. Their men’s Rugby 7s team (the Flying Fijians) are the current Olympic Champions and their women’s Fijiana Drua team are champions in the women’s Rugby Super W.
The Fiji National University’s Natabua Rugby club has student members from across all of Fiji who have come to campus to pursue their chosen university degree. The club members love their Rugby and compete in local competitions across the year as well as competing in the Fiji Inter Tertiary Games (FUSA Games) which are held annually in September.
“The club is united in their love of rugby”, says team manager Mr Samuela Nabolaniwaqa. “The opportunity to play sport whilst studying is also a great opportunity for many students as it enables them to continue participating in the sport they love whilst also studying towards their future careers. Whilst balancing training, study and their everyday lives can be challenging, the students are evolving into our future leaders and as a club, we are proud to help them along this journey”, adds Mr Nabolaniwaqa.
Club members are also committed to sustainability and in supporting their local community. The students of the club actively participate in gardening programs on campus as well as campus and beach clean ups. In addition, students regularly volunteer in local retirement homes for senior citizens.
“The students are driven to help their community by volunteering”, says Mr Nabolaniwaqa. “As a club, we actively encourage participation in events such as campus and beach clean ups. This not only helps to protect our environment into the future, but it also creates a strong camaraderie amongst our club members and everyone knows they are making a positive contribution”.
