Throughout 2023, Oceania will be featuring university clubs from around our region. All clubs are active on their university campuses and in their community. All provide opportunities for their members and unite students during their time at university.
Club of the week for 3 July is the Devine World University Basketball Club from Papua New Guinea.
Devine World University is located in Madang, Papua New Guinea. The Basketball Club is an active and social club on campus with over 88 players across both men’s and women’s competitions.
“Our main goal for this year is to be a registered club with Basketball PNG and become an official basketball association”, says Mr Devaney Aimana who is the club’s former president and now a technical official for the club. “Our aim is to increase the standard of basketball not only on our university campus, but also in our competitions in Mandang”, adds Mr Aimana.
The basketball club contributes to the local community via taking part in community service events which also helps to promote the club to the wider community and attract new players.
They are also fortunate to have success on the court as well, winning the Aiyura Basketball Association invitational event in 2022 and in 2021 were successful in local tournaments held on campus.
