Throughout 2023, Oceania are featuring university clubs from around our region. All clubs are active on their university campuses and in their community. All provide opportunities for their members and unite students during their time at university.
Club of the week for 10 July is Triton Athletics and Field House at the University of Guam
The University of Guam Triton Athletics and Field House Department had solid success with their baseball team and women’s beach volleyball team during the spring semester of 2023. Baseball completed a 14-11-1 season and finished 2nd in the UOG Baseball Classic Tournament in their season ending competition. The women’s beach volleyball team finished 2nd twice in two of the tournaments they hosted during the spring season and went 4-1 in each tournament.
The beach volleyball team, made up of Rebecca Salas and Nicolette Perez, who only have only played together starting this spring, found some solid chemistry and went 4-1 in both tournaments they played in for spring 2023. In both tournaments, the team went 4-0 but then lost in the championship match of both tournaments, to teams they had defeated in round-robin play earlier in the tournament. The combination of Salas and Perez will return in the fall of 2023 to put together a full year of playing beach together.
The UOG baseball team had a banner year in their 2nd season together, finishing 2nd in the Guam Amateur Baseball League in the fall of 2022 and then finishing 2nd to the Guam Junior National Team in the UOG Baseball Classic tournament to finish the season. UOG went 14-11-1 for the academic year and hope to win the Amateur League in the fall of 2023 and improve their showings in the UOG Baseball Invitational Tournament and the UOG Baseball Classic tournaments as well. Hopefully the Guam Major League will return in 2024 and UOG can find themselves back in the playoffs again as they did in the spring/summer of 2022. The GML did not play this past season.
Said UOG Athletics Director Doug Palmer, “Both baseball and women’s beach volleyball had great springs and helped Triton Athletics have a banner year of sports. We look forward to 2023-24 as Triton Athletics grows to 10 sports with the addition of men’s indoor and beach volleyball and they can have instant success like baseball and women’s beach volleyball has enjoyed”.
