As a university or tertiary student, balancing life, work and study is a tough task. But did you know that students who participate in physical activity and sport on campus are more likely to graduate[1]?
There is more and more research being conducted about the benefits of engaging in sport whilst completing university/tertiary study. Sport not only provides an increased likelihood of graduation but it also assists to improve academic results[2] and helps to increase social connections[3]. Investment in sport on university and college campuses can also lead to longer term health savings[4].
With this overwhelming research it is clear that sport on campus is a worthwhile investment not only for the student, but also for the wider university community. It also points to the fact that graduates who are involved in sport and physical activity are more employable for communities and companies.
FISU Oceania advocates for more sport and recreational activities and facilities on campus across the Pacific but not all campuses are on board (yet). To encourage a greater investment, FISU Oceania provides funding support for university sport activities on campuses for the annual International Day of University Sport but more funding is required if sport is to make a greater impact on student health, wellbeing and graduate outcomes.
In 2026, we want to connect further with university leadership teams, governments and pacific business leaders to showcase the benefits of investing in university sport. By investing in university sport, campuses, governments and businesses are investing in the leaders of tomorrow.
If you are interested in joining us on this journey, contact us – we’d love to connect.
