As 2026 gets underway, it is timely for FISU Oceania to reflect and revisit what was achieved in 2025.
In 2025, our work was guided by the implementation of our strategic plan. This plan has a continued focus on strengthening member engagement and supporting the development of university sport. We prioritise activities that are realistic, sustainable and achievable for our Executive Committee and our members.
Our progress in 2025 has been based on targeted and incremental action and our work has focused on:
- Supporting active engagement with our member federations
- Prioritising initiatives that benefit multiple Pacific nations and
- Strengthening awareness and understanding of FISU programs in the region.
Events in the region
We held our 3×3 Continental Qualifying Tournament (QT) with significant support from Auckland University of Technology. Winning teams represented the region at the FISU 3×3 University World Cup where their performances far surpassed expectations. Our QT event is gaining momentum and we look forward to having more countries compete in 2026.
Members in the region
With 12 members, FISU Oceania continues to support their activities and assist in facilitating international opportunities for student-athletes. Countries such as Australia and New Zealand host a vast number of national championships across their various event calendars whilst smaller nations such as Fiji continue to increase their own university games to include more participation opportunities for all students. This year, Fiji for the first time, hosted sports specific for students with a disability as part of their university games event – a first for any nation in the region.
A number of our member nations only have one tertiary institution on their island and are further increasing their engagement with community sport competitions. These student teams gain valuable competition experiences as they represent their tertiary institution within the community.
International Day of University Sport (IDUS)
Eight countries celebrated IDUS in 2025. This day not only allows universities to implement sporting activities on their campus, it also enables them to deliver a week long program that focuses on both mental and physical health. The College of the Marshall Islands engaged their students not only in sport activities, but provided nutritional classes and fitness assessments to further promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Healthy Campus
The FISU Healthy Campus Program now has more than 200 signatories from institutions across the globe. Australia leads the way with 18 signatories in this flagship program, the most of any country in the world. As the program gains momentum in the Pacific, FISU Oceania will further increase our promotion of this valued program in 2026.
2026 outlook
As we look deeper into 2026, our focus is to:
- Support members to engage with and apply the outcomes of the new FISU Global Strategy.
- Continue progressing Healthy Campus awareness and planning.
- Develop scalable approaches to student and workforce capability development, informed by Pacific engagement.
- Strengthen communication and visibility of university sport across the region.
- Maintain a sustainable, achievable and member-focused delivery model.
