FISU Oceania has today, 1 October, released its sustainability strategy – Our Green Path to 2030.
This strategy outlines the commitment FISU Oceania is making to reduce its climate footprint, and the supporting action plan creates an opportunity for the Federation to lead by example, create awareness and educate our members and communities across the Pacific.
We believe that we can make a difference by taking the following actions:
- Reducing our impact on the environment
- Engaging our client groups and stakeholders in climate action
- Promoting climate change action within university sport communities
“The Executive Committee of FISU Oceania is proud to release Our Green Path to 2030”, says President Mr David Schmude.
“Whilst our Federation is small we believe we can make a difference and contribute to reducing global carbon emission targets that have been ambitiously set by nations across the world. The supporting action plan within our strategy identifies practical actions with tangible measures and timelines. We are looking forward to annually reporting on our progress and engaging with our members and communities to make a difference”, concludes Mr Schmude.
FISU Oceania is currently the only Continental University Sport Federation that is a signatory to the United Nations Sport for Climate Action initiative and is a member of Sports Environment Alliance. Our Green Path to 2030 showcases our commitment to making a difference in our region and is supported by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) who are also a signatory to Sports for Climate Action.
“FISU and FISU Oceania are leading the way in the university sport global community by identifying climate action as a part of their overall strategy”, says Mr Martin Doulton, Chair of the FISU working group for Legacy and Sustainability.
“It is important to have sustainability as a key agenda items at Board meetings and embed practices and actions into every day operations. FISU Oceania have managed to do both and their progress in implementing their strategy is testament to their commitment to this important topic. We (FISU) look forward to using FISU Oceania as an example for other Continental and National University Sport Federations as they also commit to reducing their climate footprint” concludes Mr Doulton.
FISU Oceania’s action plan:
- We will invest in blue carbon projects that align with UN SDGs and which operate in our region.
- We will improve our internal practices to reduce our footprint.
- We will assist our members by providing support and education so they too can reduce their carbon footprint.
- We will actively advocate for climate action through our social media channels with targeted campaigns that educate and encourage our followers to take action at the local level.
- We will partner with organisation’s and universities to undertake valued research in the area of sustainability and climate change in the Pacific region.
- We will implement our Climate Champion student ambassador program to engage university students to mobilise climate action activities on campuses across the Pacific.
- We will ensure that our Executive Committee, sub-committee members, staff and volunteers are educated in sustainability, climate action and climate change by including courses in induction and onboarding processes.
