Throughout 2023, Oceania will be featuring university clubs from around our region. All clubs are active on their university campuses and in their community. All provide opportunities for their members and unite students during their time at university.
Club of the week for 10 April is QUT Pasifika Association.
The QUT Pasifika Association encourages a balance between academic, social and cultural aspects of university life for all Pacific Islander students. One way the club is doing this is by organising the annual Pasifika Varsity Games.
The intervarsity sporting event is held in the mid semester one break and involves two days of sport competition. In 2023, the two sports played are volleyball and touch football.
“The Games are a flagship event for our club”, says Club Vice President Ms Vaine Taputu-Crombie who is studying a Bachelor of Business majoring in Human Resources. “They (the Games) were started to create a community and friendly competition between all universities and their Pasifika associations through sport”, adds Ms Taputu-Crombie.
This years event saw over 25 teams compete in both the volleyball and touch football competitions from clubs such as QUT Pasifika, Griffith University PNG Student Association, UQ South Pacific Islander Association, Griffith University Pasifika Association, QUT PNG Student Association and Bond University Pasifika Student Association. In addition, indigenous teams also compete at the event.
“The camaraderie and friendship amongst all clubs is strong. The sport and cultural events on offer allow everyone to take part, it doesn’t matter about their level of skill, its all about having fun, connecting and celebrating our Pasifika culture”, says Ms Taputu-Crombie.
