Throughout 2023, Oceania will be featuring university clubs from around our region. All clubs are active on their university campuses and in their community. All provide opportunities for their members and unite students during their time at university.
Club of the week for 19 June is the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), Ultimate Frisbee club.
This club focuses on building a welcoming, fun and engaging club for AUG students to get involved with Ultimate Frisbee. At their AGM earlier this year, they elected a club leadership team to deliver an exciting year of activities and competitions for club members and for all AUT students to join.
“We pride ourselves on being an inclusive club where people have a great time, make new friends and be active in the sport of ultimate”, says Miss Kate Charlesworth. Miss Charlesworth is not only President of the AUT Ultimate club but is also represented New Zealand at the recent World Ultimate Club Championships in the USA. “I love the sport of ultimate, it has provided me with opportunities I never thought possible when I first took up the game. I enjoyed being an elite student athlete in the sport at the world level, but more importantly, I have made friends for life through the sport I love”, concludes Mss Charlesworth.
To encourage new people to the sport and to showcase the fun involved, the club host a fortnightly indoor ‘Give it a go’ sessions open to all AUT students and community, where players are taught basic Ultimate Frisbee skills and have a chance to play and socialise in a fun and welcoming environment.
“The club have build strong foundations since sport resumed on campus after the pandemic”, says Mr Bruce Meyer, Manager – AUT Recreation, Sport Development & Athlete Support Student Services. “In 2022, the club came 4th in the New Zealand Tertiary Ultimate Championships – our best result yet, and we are looking forward to finishing higher in this years competition”, concludes Mr Meyer.
The club also has multiple teams playing in local outdoor and indoor community leagues held by the Auckland Ultimate Association where they have performed well and won the ‘Most Spirited’ team in the 2022 Autumn League and had one of their female players selected as a Female MVP.
