In 2024, FISU Oceania is featuring a number of universities from across the region. This week, we feature Victoria University Wellington and the great work University Recreation Wellington do to keep the university community active and healthy.
University Recreation Wellington keeps its community healthy and happy through the provision of sport, clubs and fitness opportunities. 2024 will be another exciting year with many options for their students and university staff to connect with others, get active, and have fun doing what they love.
Key sport programs within the university include participation in the University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand Championship Series.
“We are excited to once again have representative teams participate in the championship series in 2024”, says Mr Karl Whalen, Associate Director of Sport & Recreation at the university. “After a thrilling finish to the Championship series in 2023, our students always relish the opportunity to represent Te Herenga Waka and they are motivated and focused on doing well again this year – as well as having a great time along the way”, concludes Mr Whalen.
The University is also home to a high performance rugby academy that provides young men and women with the environment and program to develop both in the classroom and on the rugby field. Taking a holistic approach, participants in the program get physical, tactical and personal development support that enables them to progress in their rugby and academic careers. The motto of the program is “Poipoia te kākano, kia puawai” – ‘Nurture the seed and it will blossom’.
Across the dates of 27 and 28 February, the university campus will come alive as their as the university Clubs Expo kicks off trimester one of the academic calendar. Over 140 student clubs will be on display to new and returning students, celebrating the rich and rewarding club scene available at the university.
