Oceania was well represented at the recent FISU Executive Committee meeting in Lausanne Switzerland. Held from 1-2 March, the meeting was attended by FISU Oceania President Mr David Schmude and Senior FISU Executive Committee member Mr Martin Doulton. Also in attendance was FISU Oceania Secretary General Miss Donna Spethman. The meeting was the first time FISU’s new Executive Committee had met after elections were held in November 2023.
The meeting heard updates from the 2025, 2027 and 2029 World University Games Summer as well as updates from the 2025 World University Games Winter. In addition, hosts were announced for the 2026 World Forum (Sweden) and numerous 2026 World University Championships.
“It’s an exciting time for Oceania in the lead up to many international university events”, says Mr Schmude. “The opportunities for student-athletes to participate in not only sporting events such as the 2025 World University Games Summer in Rhine-Ruhr Germany, but for students to also take part in educational events such as the World Forum in Zagreb in 2024 or the World Forum in Sweden in 2026. I am pleased to represent Oceania in my role on the FISU Executive Committee and look forward to working together with the FISU President and my fellow Executive Committee colleagues to further advance university sport across the globe”, concludes Mr Schmude.
Indeed the FISU Oceania President will be able to further develop university sport. FISU confirmed that the President from each of the five Continental University Sport Federations will form the FISU Development Committee to ensure positive connection from FISU to National University Sport Federations.
The Executive Committee also finalised the appointments of Chairs and members of the various FISU committees for the next mandate period . In an exciting development, female representation on FISU committee’s has risen from 18% in the last mandate period to 40% representation for this current mandate period. A significant step in FISU’s dedication to gender equality.
Australia also signed an MOU with FISU to further support and promote the FISU Healthy Campus program in the country.
The FISU Executive Committee meeting also celebrated the 75th anniversary of FISU with the unveiling of a memorial plaque at FISU headquarters in Lausanne.
