In 2024, FISU Oceania is featuring a number of universities from across the region. This week we feature the University of Guam and the success of the Triton Athletics division of the university.
The University of Guam is located in the pacific island of Guam and was established in 1952. The university is home of the Triton Athletics who have a strong history of athletic and academic performances.
The University of Guam Triton Athletics & Field House program supports student-athletes in sports including women’s rugby, men’s baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, beach volleyball and esports. Varsity teams compete in local community competitions.
The Champions of Tritons Athletics is the annual sports awards held to recognise outstanding sports performances across the academic year. Each winning student-athlete is not only recognised at this annual awards night, but are also recognised on the Champions of Triton Athletics wall. The wall is located in the university’s Calvo Field House which was first introduced in 2019. The wall highlights a photo of each award winner and stays in place for the academic year.

- Rebecca Salas – student athlete of the year
- Dominic Pangelinan – best offence (baseball)
- Nicolette Perez – best defence (beach volleyball)
- Karina Renaflor – most valuable player (rugby)
- Logan Hopkins – most valuable player (men’s basketball)
- Lovely Nilooban – most valuable player (women’s basketball)
- Thomas Odell – most valuable player (soccer)
- Jenna Almoguera – most valuable player (volleyball)
- Jathan Mua-Barnes – most valuable player (baseball)
- Olivia Leon Guerrero – most valuable player (futsal)
The University of Guam and Triton Athletics also offer recreational sport and activities including intramurals and social sport events. During February, the university has hosted social sport competitions in the sports of Dodgeball, mixed basketball, mixed volleyball, mixed fusal, esports, tug of war as part of the Presidents Cup. These social sport events are held in the lead up to the university Charter Day on 7 March.
In 2024 the university will celebrate 56 years since the founding of the university. Charter Day celebrations is the largest community event held on campus and this year will be held under the theme Tulos Mo’na – propelling forward in unison.
