Australia welcomes home new WUC Cycling Champion

Australia has welcomed home its newest world cycling champion as the World University Cycling Championship concludes in the Phillipines.

Cyrus Monk has crossed the line first in the men's road race in Tagaytay on March 18 and whilst not considered one of the favourites, he was one of the inform athletes at the WUC.

Taking charge of the men's road race, Monk, from The University of Melbourne, took advantage of his current training schedule (and European downtime) to claim Australia's first gold medal of the 2016 World University Championship (WUC) season.

"The terrain of both the road and criterium courses was far more difficult than expected.

Luckily for me the steep hills made the racing harder which gave me the advantage after having recently completed a hard block of training while many of the Europeans have been having their winter break,"said Monk.

The day prior to his victory on the road, Monk secured the bronze medal in the men's criterium.
