FISU Oceania would like to welcome Lois Garena to the role of Papua New Guinea (PNG) Regional Development Officer.
Ms Garena is well versed in university sport, having played, coached and officiated throughout her university career.
In her more recent role as PNG Sports Foundation High Performance Division Manager - Programs and Education, the University of PNG graduate is instrumental in ensuring the development and success of short and long term programs, developing event management plans and adhering to budgets.
Confirming her appointment to the role, FISU Oceania President Martin Doulton is excited by the opportunities the role presents for not only PNG but the Oceania region as a whole.
"Already, Lois's work with the PNG High Performance team stands her in good stead to gain some traction in the university sporting sector but also to maintain alliances with organisations like the PNG Olympic Committee and subsequent sporting organisations," said Martin.
Lois's appointment is the second of three roles FISU Oceania will engage with during 2016 after the appointment of Tony Siamomua in Samoa earlier this year.
The regional development program allows member NUSFs to benefit from a staff member allocated to their NUSF to assist in development of the NUSF unisport goals. This person will also coordinate the local university games event in conjunction with the local organising committee.
In the first phase of the program, it is expected that regional development officers will be allocated to Samoa, Fiji and Papua New Guinea as these NUSFs have existing university games events. Funding dependant, the second phases will include other NUSFs.
In return for a staff member to be based in their country, the NUSFs will be required to enter into a partnership with FISU Oceania and provide a number of logistical and operational aspects to ensure the staff member is able to conduct its role.
