Samoa Uni-Games a Success

When it comes to University Games, there is a special bond formed when teams communicate with each other to carry the ball or compete in a particular sport. At Samoa’s Uni-Games on Saturday, September 10th, 2016, the teamwork and competitiveness shown by students throughout the day helped strangers become close friends and friends become closer than before.

University Sports is designed to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and a healthy balanced lifestyle while enhancing student life. Student leaders from both the National University of Samoa (NUS) and the University of the South Pacific Alafua Campus (USP Alafua) worked together from as early as May 2016 to plan and prepare for the September Uni-Games.

The multicultural populace of students from both NUS and USP Alafua competed in; touch rugby, netball and soccer at this year’s Uni-Games. Although the level of competition got a bit serious at times, students maintained a friendly environment that allowed for both Universities to build/maintain new and existing relationships amongst students.

The workforce committee behind the Uni-Games envisions for the future, that University Sports can partner with the private sector and relevant government ministries. This partnership would work to expand the initiatives of all stakeholders involved in Uni-Games and at the same time, develop elite student athletes that can form the next generation of elite sports people and Olympic medalists for Samoa and the Pacific Islands.
